The course will cover several modules as follows:
Optical Fiber Communication System
The aim of this topic is to provide an introduction and in-depth exposure into the fiber optic communication system, present and future technology and its applications. The module will be separated into different parts between long haul (SDH and DWDM), medium haul (MAN, CWDM and FTTH) and short haul (Optical LAN).
Optical Fiber Cables
The topic will provide participants with an overview of the light-wave and fiber technology - its background, evolution and applications. Fundamental issues concerning fibre optics and the motivation behind the current shift and migration to fiber optics based networks would be elaborated.
Optical Fiber Devices
Participants would be introduced to the various components and devices that constitute a fibre-based communication system. These include passive and active devices such as optical couplers, isolators, wavelength-division multiplexers (WDM), optical amplifier, transmitter and receiver. Standard of tests and measurements in characterizing the passive components such as insertion loss (IL), return loss (RL), splitting ratio and etc will provide the best understanding of the passive components in fiber optic applications.
Optical Fiber Test and Measurement Techniques
System maintenance work involves the periodic testing of its performance and identification of points of errors. This
